Women suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can experience relief from their symptoms by donning their ladies fitness clothing and exercising regularly, a study has suggested.

Researchers at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg and at Alingsas Hospital studied 102 IBS patients between the ages of 18 and 65.

Half the group increased their physical activity as part of the study and the other half maintained their usual lifestyle.

"They were advised to perform moderate to vigorous physical activity for 20 to 30 minutes three to five times a week," Elisabet Johannesson, a registered physiotherapist and one of the authors of the study, said of the exercise group.

Riadh Sadik, a senior physician who was involved in the study, said that the active group showed an improvement in symptoms of around 51 per cent.

Women who exercise regularly can also reduce their risk of developing breast cancer, research from Dr Marilyn Glenville, a nutritionist specialising in female health, said earlier this month.
