Exercise in gym wear 'could slow the progression of ALS'

Women suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) could slow their disease's progression by donning ladies gym clothing and exercising more, a study has suggested.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive, fatal motor neurone condition.

In research on mouse models with ALS, Dr Kelvin Jones, a recipient of this year's ALS Canada Discovery Grant, found that exercise had a positive impact, slowing the disease significantly.

He said that the findings are "very encouraging" and suggested that building more slow-twitch muscle fibres in ALS patients could be the answer to slowing the progression of the disease.

Earlier this month, Dr Kathryn Schmitz, a member of the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, suggested that cancer patients should also don their men's or women's fitness clothing.

She said that exercise both during and after treatment can help to prevent the disease from returning.
