Government exercise recommendations lower the risks of chronic diseases but, without caloric regulation, do not prevent weight gain in women with an already high body mass index (BMI), a study has suggested.
Researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, examined weight changes associated with different physical activity levels in 34,079 healthy women.
Throughout the 13-year study, the women were asked to report their weight and exercise levels.
Results revealed that, on average, the women gained of 5.7 lbs.
Over 13.3 per cent of those with a BMI lower than 25 at study start successfully maintained their weight. These women took part in an average of 60 minutes a day of moderate-intensity activity.
"Physical activity was inversely related to weight gain only among normal-weight women; among heavier women, there was no relation, emphasising the importance of controlling caloric intake for weight maintenance in this group."
These results support the views of the NHS, which claims that to lose weight, people should not only don their ladies fitness clothing and exercise regularly, but adopt a healthier and more nutritious diet.
