Women who exercise regularly in their ladies fitness clothing have a lower risk of developing dementia, research has suggested.
Results of the Framingham Study, which point towards this conclusion, were presented yesterday (July 11th)at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease.
This population-based study has monitored residents of the town of Framingham in Massachusetts since 1948 for cardiovascular risk factors and cognitive performance.
The researchers found that participants who performed moderate to high levels of exercise had around a 40 per cent lower risk of developing any type of dementia.
Dr Zaldy Tan, of Harvard Medical School, explained more about the study's findings: "It suggests that lowering the risk for dementia may be one additional benefit of maintaining at least moderate physical activity, even into the eighth decade of life."
According to the NHS, Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia and usually occurs in those aged over 65.
