Women should not expect exercise in their ladies fitness clothing to cure their mental ill health, but it can help to improve their mood, an expert has suggested.
Richard Colwill, spokesperson for mental health charity Sane, said that those with mental illnesses often have low levels of motivation, especially when it comes to exercise.
He suggested people should don their men's and women's fitness clothing and work exercise into their daily routines, such as going for "a run before breakfast, or a brisk walk at lunchtime with a work colleague".
"If you think too much about exercise beforehand you can rationalise yourself out of doing it," Mr Colwill explained.
His comments follow the recent publication of research from the University of Essex that showed that as little as five minutes of outdoor exercise can lead to both mental and physical health improvements.
Exercises that the researchers found to be beneficial included walking, gardening, cycling, fishing, boating, horse-riding and farming.
