Exercise 'increases IQ'

Young women that don their ladies fitness wear and exercise regularly have a higher IQ than those that leave their women's sportswear in the wardrobe, accordingto a recent study.

The IQ and fitness levels of 1.2 million Swedes doing military service were analysed and a clear link between good physical fitness and higher IQ test results was found.

"Being fit means that you also have good heart and lung capacity and that your brain gets plenty of oxygen," said Michael Nilsson, chief physician at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital, which conducted the research.

In the study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, twins were analysed and the researchers determined that environmental factors explain the link between fitness and IQ, as opposed to genetics.

Researcher Maria Aberg said that physical education has an important place in schools and is an "absolute must" if youngsters are to do well in maths and other theoretical subjects.
