Those suffering from chronic neck pain could improve their symptoms by donning their gym clothing and taking part in therapeutic exercise sessions, a report has suggested.

Published in the November issue of the journal Arthritis Care & Research, the report indicates that narcotics and diagnostic testing are overused in treating this type of pain.

Reviews cited in the report support the effectiveness of therapeutic exercise in combating chronic neck pain, yet only 53 per cent of sufferers have been prescribed this treatment.

"Based on current evidence, several treatments were overused and some effective treatments were underused," concluded Dr Adam Goode, from the University of North Carolina's Cecil G Sheps Center for Health Services Research.

These other methods included acupuncture, spinal manipulation and therapeutic massage.

Earlier this month, a study published in the November issue of the journal Pain suggested that women suffering from the painful condition fibromyalgia can reduce their symptoms by donning their ladies yoga clothing and taking part in the relaxing form of exercise.
