Exercise 'keeps the heart young'

Exercise 'keeps the heart young'

05 April 2011 11:15

Women can make sure their hearts stay healthy and strong by donning their ladies fitness clothing and exercising regularly throughout their lives, a study has shown.

Scientists from Texas in the US looked at the effects that different levels of exercise have on heart mass.

They found that the mass of inactive people's hearts diminishes, whereas those who exercised regularly throughout their lives not only preserved this mass, but built on it.

Dr Benjamin Levine, the lead investigator of the study, said the results of the research suggest that, if middle-aged people exercise four to five times a week, "this may go a very long way in preventing some of the major heart conditions of old age, including heart failure".

The research was recently presented at the American College of Cardiology's 60th Annual Scientific Session.

Last month, Saga Magazine claimed that people can remain healthy for longer by donning their gym clothing and exercising regularly.
