People who are feeling low should don their gym clothing and exercise more as it helps to lift the mood in many ways, a nutritional therapist has claimed.
Patrick Holford wrote in the Daily Mail that eating the right things and staying active are two of the best ways of combating the winter blues.
He claimed that going for a walk can help a person to improve their mood if they are feeling down or upset.
Mr Holford explained that exercise reduces the levels of homocysteine in the blood. This is a toxic amino acid that, in high measures, causes people to feel low.
He also said that outdoor exercise helps to boost serotonin levels due to the greater exposure to sunlight and vitamin D.
"Only five per cent of the rays that make vitamin D get through glass so, when you can, exercise outdoors for 30 minutes a day," Mr Holford wrote.
Back in April, researchers from Southern Methodist University claimed that exercise should more widely be prescribed as a treatment for depression.
