People with a high resting heart rate have a shorter life expectancy, but this can be improved through regular exercise in gym clothing, an expert has suggested.
Dr Lonn, a cardiologist and professor at McMaster University, made these claims at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress 2010, which was co-hosted by the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society.
A study she conducted found that the higher a person's heart rate is, the greater their risk of death from cardiovascular and other causes is too.
Dr Lonn said that medication can lower a person's heart rate, but that some people can achieve this through increasing their exercise levels.
"Eating a balanced diet, being physically active, managing stress, limiting caffeine intake and being smoke-free can help improve your heart health, regardless of the effects on heart rate," she added.
Earlier this week, obesity surgery provider the Hospital Group claimed that 2.8 million people in the UK are now classed as obese and are at risk of heart problems.
