People who regularly don their gym clothing and exercise suffer from fewer and milder colds than those who are not physically fit, a study has suggested.
Research published online in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that therewere a number of factors that seemed to reduce a person's likelihood of developing a cold, but the main one was found to be exercise.
Participants in the study who exercised on only one or fewer days a week experienced cold symptoms on between 43 to 46 per cent more days than those who said they were physically active on five or more days of the week.
"The severity of symptoms fell by 41 per cent among those who felt the fittest and by 31 per cent among those who were the most active," a British Medical Journal summary of the research said.
Last week, registered physician assistant and nutritionist Amy Hendel said that exercise boosts the immune system and, therefore, helps to prevent people from becoming ill.
