Exercise 'protects soldiers' knees'

Exercise 'protects soldiers' knees'

17 January 2011 12:02

Women in the armed forces can protect their knees by donning their ladies fitness wear and taking part in certain exercises, a study has suggested.

Researchers from the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre in Surrey studied some 1,500 army recruits over 3.5 months of intense training.

They found that doing certain exercises, instead of regular warm-up moves, before each training session could reduce the risk of knee injuries by 75 per cent.

Of those who completed the targeted exercises, only one per cent developed pain in their knees, compared to five per cent of those who carried out traditional warm-ups.

Only three of those who did the new exercises were discharged at the end of the training due to being "unfit for army service", compared to 25 in the other group.

According to the NHS, those who are suffering knee pain following surgery on the joint can experience improvement through taking part in physiotherapy exercises and sports such as swimming and cycling.
