Exercise 'reduces frequency of headaches'

Exercise 'reduces frequency of headaches'

20 August 2010 16:34

Young women who experience a lot of headaches can reduce these by putting on their ladies fitness clothing and exercising more, a study has suggested.

Published in the August 18th online issue of the journal Neurology, the research involved 5,847 students aged between 13 and 18.

Those who were overweight, got little exercise and smoked were 3.4 times more likely to have frequent headaches than those with none of these negative lifestyle factors.

Teenagers who exercised less than twice a week had a 20 per cent greater risk of suffering frequent headaches than those who exercised at least this often and had no other negative factors.

Dr Andrew Hershey, of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, wrote an editorial accompanying the study.

"This study is a vital step toward a better understanding of lifestyle factors and potential preventive measures that can be taken," he said.

Deborah Daley wrote in a health feature for the Daily Express earlier this year that cycling and Pilates are great forms of exercise for reducing headaches.
