Women should don their ladies fitness clothing and take part in regular moderate exercise if they want to lower their risk of respiratory infections.
This is according to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) fellow Dr David Nieman.
He explained that moderate exercise consists of a 30-minute workout a day, on most, if not all, days of the week.
"The good news, for the majority of fitness enthusiasts … is that the number of sick days they'll take during the common cold season is reduced by at least 40 per cent," said Dr Nieman.
He went on to say that prolonged, intense exercise, however, can weaken the immune system and allow viruses to develop and spread.
Earlier this month, research published online in the British Journal of Sports Medicine supported Dr Nieman's claims, stating that those who exercise regularly suffer from fewer and milder colds than those who are not physically fit.
