Mothers should lead by example when it comes to exercise and eating habits, according to mydaughter.co.uk.
Alison Morris, editor of the parental advice site, said: "Parents, particularly mothers, should model the healthy lifestyle and values that they want their daughter to adopt because children tend to copy them, at least until puberty strikes."
A survey published this week by UK teen magazine Sugar, found that 38 per cent of teenage girls view their mum as being the biggest influence on their self image.
Of the 512 girls questioned, six per cent admitted to having had an eating disorder, with the figure increasing to ten per cent where the girls' mums dieted.
"It's not just young girls who feel under pressure to be thin but it seems as though girls become body conscious at a much younger age than their mothers did," said Ms Morris.
Women that put on their women's fitness wear and exercise regularly will establish health living as a norm for their children.
However, according to Ms Morris, the most important thing to do is "make sure your daughter knows that you value her for who she is, not how she looks".
