People who want to make sure they do not pile on the pounds over Christmas should consider donning their ladies fitness clothing and exercising more, the British Dietetic Association has advised.
Anna Raymond, a spokeswoman for the association, said that exercising can help to burn off the extra calories that a lot of people consume over the festive period.
She noted that one of the main ways that people can avoid gaining weight over the coming weeks is to exercise some willpower.
"If you're going to the Christmas staff party it might be a buffet style dinner, so instead of being tempted to pick at the food … just get a plate and portion-control yourself," she advised.
Her comments follow the publication of research by the Association of Public Health Observatories, which shows that the UK has the highest levels of overweight and obese adults in Europe.
London, at 18 per cent, has a lower rate of obesity than other UK cities, but this is still higher than the worst region in Sweden at 16 per cent.
