Exercise with two anti-addiction drugs 'causes weight loss'

02 August 2010 12:00

Women who exercise in their ladies fitness clothing as well as taking a combination of two anti-addiction drugs can boost their weight loss, a study has suggested.

Research conducted in the US and published by the Lancet involved 1,742 overweight or obese participants.

They were split into two groups, all of the participants were told to adopt a low-calorie diet and to exercise regularly, but one group was given a combination of the drugs naltrexone and bupropion and the other was given placebo pills.

Only half of the participants finished the 56-week study, but people in the non-placebo group who completed it lost up to 6.1 per cent of their body weight, compared to just 1.3 per cent in the placebo group.

If, in future clinical trials, the combination of drugs is proven to help with weight loss, it could become the new sought-after diet pill.

Earlier this year, Dr Laura Wyness, senior nutrition scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation, said that those taking pills to lose weight should ditch them and focus their attentions on exercising more and eating less instead.ADNFCR-2569-ID-800009833-ADNFCR
