Exercise"more effective"than shockwave treatment

Supervised exercise in women's fitness wear is more effective in relieving shoulder pain than shockwave treatment, according to Norwegian researchers.

The study, published on the British Medical Journal website, involved over 100 patients with subacromial shoulder pain lasting at least three months.

Half of the patients received radial extracorporeal shockwave treatment using low to medium energy impulses delivered into the shoulder tissue.

Researchers in Oslo, Norway, compared the effectiveness of this with the effects of supervised exercises - two 45-minute weekly sessions for up to 12 weeks - completed by the other 52 patients.

The study found that supervised exercises were more effective than radial extracorporeal shockwave treatment for short-term improvement in patients with subacromial shoulder pain.

According to the NHS there are a number of causes behind shoulder pain, which can be severe and ongoing.

It recommends doing gentle, regular exercise in comfortable gym clothing to keep the shoulder joint mobile.
