Exercising to piano music 'can reduce falls in the elderly'

Music-based exercise in gym clothing can improve the balance of elderly people, helping them to avoid falls, a study has suggested.

A report detailing the study has been posted online and will be published in the March 28th print issue ofArchives of Internal Medicine.

The study included 134 adults who were aged over 65 and were at an increased risk of falling.

Participants in the study were randomly assigned to either a music-based multitask exercise programme or a delayed intervention control group.

Performance in balance and functional tests improved more in the intervention group than the control group.

"Our findings suggest that this programme may be useful for fall prevention and rehabilitation in community-based setting such as senior centres," the report's authors write.

Earlier in the year, research published in the open-access journal BMC Research Notes suggested that osteoporosis sufferers can reduce their risk of falls by taking part in martial arts classes.
