Four types of exercises that are safe for arthritis sufferers to take part in have been identified by experts.
The American College of Rheumatology (ACR) claims that people with arthritis who exercise experience less pain, more energy, improved sleep and better day-to-day functioning.
It recommends this group of patients tries one or more of the major types of exercise - flexibility, strengthening, aerobic and body awareness.
The ACR advises that a range of motion exercises should be performed five to ten times on a daily basis.
Stretching exercises, however, should be performed at least three days a week with each stretch being held for 30 seconds.
"Starting slowly, with low intensity, will allow you to ease into a successful exercise plan that will benefit your arthritis and your overall health," said Dr Stanley Cohen, president at the ACR.
Earlier this month, research from Iowa State University found that regularly walking in high heels can contribute to joint degeneration and knee osteoarthritis.
