Family involvement in exercise 'helps in stroke recovery'

Women who have suffered from strokes can recover more quickly if their family are involved in the exercise therapy that they complete in their gym clothing, a study has suggested.

Researchers from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, found that motor function, balance, the distance walked and the ability to perform daily living activities can all be improved through family-assisted exercise therapy.

"It's a win-win situation for everyone," said principal investigator of the study Dr Emma Stokes, senior lecturer in physiotherapy at Trinity College Dublin.

"People with stroke, their families and healthcare providers share in the benefit," she explained.

The research has been published in the March print issue of Stroke - the journal of the American Heart Association.

According to the NHS, over 150,000 people have a stroke every year in the UK, with those aged over 65 being most at risk.

After heart disease and cancer, stroke is the third largest cause of death across the nation.
