Female athletes' injuries are due to 'male-tailored training programmes'

Female athletes sustain more injuries than male sportsmen as their training programmes are developed by and for men, recent research suggests.

Dr Vicki Harber led the study at the University of Alberta and claims that most training regimes are developed following research using young malesand the biological differences between the sexes are not taken into consideration.

A guide written recently by Dr Harber, called the Female Athlete Perspective, has stated: "Increased understanding about the uniqueness of the female athlete will lead to athlete-appropriate education, improved awareness and prevention of the conditions known to interfere with female athlete performance."

Dr Harber writes that girls suffer higher injury incidence rates compared to boys but that programmes focusing on things such as balance, core stability and sport-specific skills are effective in reducing these injury rates.

The NHS recommends that, before donning ladies fitness wear and heading out to exercise, women should ask a qualified health professional or sports coach for training and safety advice.
