Women looking to don their ladies fitness clothing and keep up their exercise regimes over the coming months despite the poor weather should update their iPods, one commentator has claimed.
Mark Walton-Cook, writing in the Daily Telegraph, advised people to choose up-tempo Christmas songs as these will help to spur them on while exercising.
He reports Dr Costas Karageorghis, sport psychologist at Brunel University who researches the impact of music on athletes, as saying that the ideal music tempo is about five beats per minute (BPM) above a person's working heart rate.
"If you jog at 120 beats per minute, you should push yourself with music of about 125 BPM," Dr Karageorghis explained.
Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You is one track that has a tempo of 125 BPM.
Earlier this month, a study was released online before its publication in the Archives of Internal Medicine next year claiming that music-based exercise can improve the balance of elderly people, helping them to avoid falls.
