College students can reduce their risk of developing chronic diseases by putting on their men's or ladies fitness wear and being more physically active, a study has suggested.
Researchers at Tufts University in Boston studied data from 564 male and female students who enrolled in the Tufts Longitudinal Health Study, which ran between 1998 and 2007.
They found that a lack of physical fitness had more of a negative impact on certain metabolic risk factors than body fat.
"Our results tell us that men and women in late adolescence and early adulthood are already showing chronic disease risk, but that keeping fit may help reduce this risk," said senior author Dr Jennifer Sacheck, assistant professor at the Friedman School.
Earlier this month, Dr Kathryn Schmitz, a member of the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, suggested that those who have already been diagnosed and treated for a certain chronic disease - cancer - should continue to exercise.
She explained that this can help to prevent the disease from returning.
