Food for runners tips from Michelin-starred restaurant chef

11 September 2009 18:30

Sugar and carbohydrates are best before a long run in your ladies running wear, according to Le Gavroche chef Michel Roux junior.

Mr Roux, chef at the two Michelin-starred Mayfair restaurant, has run 16 marathons and oneultra marathon of 100km, which he finished in just over 11 hours.

"If you're going to go for a run you need high-energy food," the chef told the Telegraph.

"You need something carbohydrate based that's really going to fuel you."

Mr Roux recommended eating sugar and carbs an hour before a run.

"You want something that's going to quickly be transferred into energy and fuel," he said, and also suggested slow burning carbs like pasta or pancakes made with whole wheat flour.

The chef also said it was wise to eat protein after a run and that the occasional treat is ok.

Bupa recommends running in comfortable nylon or polyester clothes but the items of ladies fitness wear they particularly recommend are a decent pair of trainers and a sports bra.ADNFCR-2569-ID-19357342-ADNFCR
