The advice that doctors give to their patients about dieting and exercise can be affected by their own personal habits, a study has shown.
Research conducted by the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center suggests that the amount of time a doctor spends exercising in their gym clothing impacts on their confidence to advice others about physical activity.
"Living a healthy lifestyle themselves translates into a more believable message to their patients," said lead author of the study Dr Michael Howe, chief medical resident at University of Michigan Health System.
He went on to say that physicians lead busy lives, but added that eating well and exercising regularly "may result in better personal health as well as improved patient care".
The research also revealed that attending physicians take better care of themselves than trainees, whose diets are heavier in fast food.
Earlier this week, Jonathan Pinkney, a professor at the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry in Plymouth, said that regular brisk walks are the bare minimum that people should be doing in terms of exercise.
