Women who want to work up a sweat in their gym clothing without spending lots of money should consider taking up gardening.
This is according to Donna McDaid, national secretary for the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners (NSALG).
"Just 30 minutes gardening can burn as many calories as aerobic exercise and can help prevent and tackle problems such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity," she said.
Ms McDaid went on to say that that allotments are increasing in popularity as people become more conscious of the air miles associated with supermarket produce.
She said that people also have a sense of achievement when they see it through from seed to crop.
Her comments follow the publication of a survey by NSALG, which found that the average allotment can produce 745kg of produce per year and that this could be sold for £1,564.
It also found that the average cost of running a 250 sq m plot is £202 per annum.
