Gout drug 'helps angina sufferers exercise longer in ladies fitness wear'

A drug called allopurinol, which has been used for over 40 years to treat gout, could also help female angina sufferers to exercise for longer in their ladies fitness wear, a study has suggested.

Researchers from the University of Dundee said that, in clinical studies, allopurinol increased the time in which people suffering from angina could exercise before chest pain started.

"What is exciting is that it looks as if allopurinol may work by protecting the heart from oxygen starvation," said Peter Weissberg, medical director of the British Heart Foundation, the charity which funded the study.

He went on to say that if this is the case, it could potentially "help the heart in other situations as well, such as after a heart attack".

According to the NHS, the causes of angina include high-fat diets, a lack of exercise, excess alcohol, smoking and high blood pressure.

It recommends people can prevent developing the condition by making lifestyle changes such as exercising regularly, perhaps at a fitness centre in gym clothing.
