Govt 'should make it easier for people to exercise'

To tackle obesity, the government should make it easier for people to exercise in their men's and women's sportswear, the results of a series of studies have suggested.

The research findings, collated in a book by University of Edinburgh scientist Dr Jamie Pearce, advocate that local authorities should provide residents with greater access to good parks, encouraging them to be more active.

"Authorities could do more to change the way entire populations live … making it easier for people to eat well and be active. Doing a little could make a big difference," he explained.

Dr Pearce also said people are aware that they should eat well and exercise regularly, but it can be difficult in practice as fast food is so readily available and the easiest way to get around is often by car.

According to the most recent figures from the NHS, nearly a quarter of adults in England were obese in 2008.

Just under a third of women and 42 per cent of men were classed as overweight in the same year.
