Girls who don their gym clothing and exercise in a way that they enjoy with people that they like are more likely to stay physically active as they grow up, a study has suggested.
The research that concluded this was conducted by Mark Eys,an associate professor of kinesiology and physical education at Wilfrid Laurier University and the Canada research chair in group dynamics and physical activity.
He is to present his findings as part of this week's Canada Research Chairs conference in Toronto.
"If people are in groups that they enjoy, they're more likely to stick to their exercise regimens," Mr Eys said.
He went on to say that the goal of his research is to "have something to be able to take to coaches, to be able to take to organisations" that would show how a cohesive group environment can be created.
This will make it more likely that children will enjoy exercise and will hold onto this perception as they enter adulthood.
Earlier in the year, Rich Leigh, weight loss expert and founder of fatfreefitness.co.uk, suggested that people exercise harder and for longer if they do so in a group as opposed to working out alone.
