Elderly people can boost their muscle mass by donning their gym clothing and taking part in resistance exercise training in combination with blood flow restriction practices.
This is according to research conducted by the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.
The scientists involved found that a practice adopted by bodybuilders - moderately and temporarily restricting the flow of blood through muscles - can be combined with low-level resistance exercise training to increase muscle mass in older people.
Bodybuilders use this practice as it makes light weights feel heavier and senior author of the study Blake Rasmussen believes this could also be used by patients who have had surgery but are not able to lift enough weight to keep their muscles in shape.
"Or for people who have arthritis or other conditions that make lifting heavy weights a problem," he added.
Earlier this week Michelle Mitchell, director Age UK, suggested that older women who exercise a few times a week, perhaps in ladies fitness wear, can experience health benefits and an improved quality of life.
