Gym-goers motivated by 'feel-good factor'

04 February 2010 17:00

Women who don their ladies gym wear and exercise regularly experience a "feel-good factor" that motivates them to persevere with their fitness regimes, recent research has suggested.

Researchers at the London Metropolitan University conducted the Exercise Behaviour Study for Fitness First as part of International Fitness Week and found that, without this factor, gym-goers are likely to kick their healthy habits within just three to six months.

"External motivations, such as the desire to lose weight, will motivate people for around three to six months," the Telegraph reported Dr Jeremy Adams, leader of the study, as saying.

"People will only tend to continue beyond that if they feel better having exercised, if they feel they have more energy or feel less stressed," he added.

The end of last month saw Imperial College London encouraging its staff and students to don their gym wear and take part in physical activities as part of its Healthy Living Week.
