Many women are put off donning their ladies fitness clothing and exercising by the high cost of gym memberships, a study has shown.

The YouGov survey conducted on behalf of World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) found that 30 per cent of people said the cost of gyms and leisure centres prevents them being more physically active.

Dr Rachel Thompson, deputy head of science at WCRF, said: "It is a concern that so many people feel that financial cost is stopping them being more physically active."

She went on to say that people do not have to sign up at gyms in order to keep fit, they can do so for free.

Dr Thompson recommended people take up brisk walking or running or start playing a sport that they enjoy.

Last year, Wina Sturgeon wrote in Women's Adventure Magazine that there are a number of "perfectly good" exercises that people can do without having to spend lots of money at a gym.
