Health clubs 'will offer more age-appropriate exercises'

Health clubs are to offer more age-appropriate exercises to gym clothing-clad clients this year, according to the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association.

Meredith Poppler, a spokeswoman for the association, told Reuters that clubs are realising they cannot just offer one-size-fits-all classes.

She said that group exercise sessions will increase in popularity in 2011, as will personal training, sports-specific workouts and wellness programming.

"Baby boomers are obviously the fastest growing market for operators across the board. They have more free time, and in many cases, more funds," Ms Poppler added.

She went on to say that the second fastest growing demographic is children aged from six to 17, suggesting that child obesity was the driving factor behind this growth.

Last month, research by the Association of Public Health Observatories showed that the UK has the highest level of overweight and obese adults in Europe.

London has a lower rate of obesity than other UK cities but it is still higher than the worst region in Sweden.
