Heavy weights 'do not have to be used to build muscles'

Heavy weights 'do not have to be used to build muscles'

12 August 2010 14:44

Women can build their muscles without having to lift lots of heavy weights down at the gym in their ladies fitness clothing, a study has suggested.

Researchers from McMaster University found that people can achieve a similar increase in muscle mass by using lighter weights.

The trick is to lift weights until the muscles become fatigued, the researchers explained.

"Rather than grunting and straining to lift heavy weights, you can grab something much lighter but you have to lift it until you can't lift it anymore," said Stuart Phillips, associate professor of kinesiology at McMaster University.

He went on to assert that increasing muscle is achieved, over time, by stimulating it to generate new proteins.

Earlier in the year, researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston found a way of increasing the muscle mass of the elderly without them having to lift heavy weights.

They moderately and temporarily restricted the flow of blood through the patients' muscles while they also took part in low-level resistance exercise training.
