Home-based exercise 'reduces fractures in elderly women'

Elderly women can reduce their risk of sustaining bone fractures by donning their ladies fitness clothing and taking part in exercise sessions, a study has suggested.

Researchers from Oulu Deaconess Institute in Finland found that home-based exercises followed by voluntary home training can improve long-term balance and gait, which reduces the likelihood of falls.

Study's authors said in an article in the September 27th issue of the journal Archives of Internal Medicine that hip fractures are "associated with high mortality rates and increased morbidity".

The 160 participants in the study were split into two groups - one that exercised and one that did not.

After 7.1 years, 17 women in the exercise group were treated in hospital for fractures, while 23 fractures occurred in the control group.

"Regular daily physical activity should be recommended to elderly women with osteopenia," the study's authors concluded.

Last month, Dr Norman Pollock, bone biologist at the Medical College of Georgia's Georgia Prevention Institute, claimed that exercise is one of the best things that people can do to encourage bone growth.
