Women who don their gym clothing and keep physically active are more likely to maintain the energy to exercise in the future than those who do not keep fit, a study has suggested.
Researchers from the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute at Lake Nona explained that muscles require the protein co-activator PGC-1 to convert fuel into energy.
Physical stimulation boosts PGC-1 activity in muscle cells, which then increases fuel storage.
In obese individuals, however, PGC-1 levels drop, which could further reduce a person's capacity to exercise.
"Part of our interest in understanding the factors that allow muscles to exercise is the knowledge that whatever this machinery is, it becomes inactive in obesity, ageing, diabetes and other chronic conditions that affect mobility," the study's author Dr Daniel Kelly said.
Last month, researchers from Louisiana State University System found that inactive people with type 2 diabetes can improve their glycemic levels through taking part in a combination of aerobic and resistance exercises.
