Interval training is suitable for everyone, not just athletes in their professional ladies fitness clothing, an expert has suggested.
Martin Gibala, professor and chair of the department of kinesiology at McMaster University, said that interval training can be effective and time-efficient without being extremely difficult.
"While still a very demanding form of training, the exercise might be more achievable by the general public - not just elite athletes - and it certainly doesn't require the use of specialised laboratory equipment."
His comments follow the recent publication of a study in the March issue of The Journal of Physiology.
The study found that those who don their gym wear and take part in short interval training sessions experience the same health benefits (a decreased risk of reduce the risk diseases such as Type 2 diabetes) as those who exercise for the length of time typically recommended by public health agencies.
Steve Halsall, exercise expert for the Mirror, recently said that interval training is a good exercise for those who are strapped for time.
