Kids 'not doing enough sport'

Only 51 per cent of children are putting on their gym clothes and doing three hours of sport a week, according to a survey.

The government's PE and Sport Survey 2008/09 found there is plenty of opportunity for children to exercise as schools provide an average of 18.6 different sports including football, dance, athletics, badminton and volleyball.

However, many are not making the most of these opportunities.

Minister for children, schools and families Iain Wright said the department is aiming to get all children to do five hours of sport each week.

"For the first time ever a government is willing to legislate to make this a reality for all young people," he said.

According to the NHS, one of the main causes of childhood obesity is a lack of physical exercise.

It said that setting an example by putting on your women's gym clothing and partaking in regular exercise will encourage your child to be more active and give them something positive to aspire to.ADNFCR-2569-ID-19413287-ADNFCR
