Knee surgery can 'improve balance among elderly'

Elderly women keen to make use of their gym clothing may improve the possibility of performing light exercise by having a knee replacement, research suggests.

A study presented to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeonssuggested that the surgery improves knee function, reduces pain and improves balance in elderly patients.

Commenting on the findings, study author Leonid Kandel, of the Hadassah Mount Scopus Hospital in Jerusalem, said: "Balance is critical to the elderly, especially those with knee problems.

"This improved balance is a significant quality-of-life change in elderly patients."

Researchers were particularly impressed with the performance of surgery patients on the Oxford Knee Score and Quality of Life questionnaires, which suggested that elderly people would feel more comfortable about doing daily activities.

Meanwhile, research carried out by scientists at the University of Hampshire in 2008 suggested that elderly women can improve their strength in gym clothes as much as young women, but are still at risk of falls.

This is because the researchers believe impaired muscle function is a natural part of the aging process.
