Children who do not exercise regularly may be at an increased risk of asthma, a study has claimed, which could encourage women to don their ladies fitness clothing and take part in physical activity with their offspring.
Research, to be published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, found that even if children are of normal weight, they are more likely to develop asthma if they have an imbalanced metabolism or lead a sedentary lifestyle.
Lead author of the study Dr Giovanni Piedimonte said that the findings imply that metabolic pathways have a strong influence on the body's immune mechanisms.
"Our present data suggest[s] that strict monitoring and dietary control of triglyceride and glucose levels starting in the first years of life may have a role in the management of chronic asthma in children," he added.
Last month, research conducted in Brazil and published in the journal Chest showed that regular aerobic exercise could help to improve respiratory symptoms and psychological distress in adult female asthma sufferers.
