Lack of exercise 'linked to climate change'

A reduction in the amount of exercise people take part in is linked to climate change, researchers have claimed.

Robin Stott and Ian Roberts suggested in an editorial written on behalf of the Climate and Health Council that people are exercising less in their gym clothing as they use fossil fuel-consuming methods of transport to get around.

"The planet is getting hotter, its people are getting fatter and the use of fossil fuel energy is the cause of both," they continued.

Mr Stott and Mr Roberts claimed that moving to a low carbon economy would force people to be more active through a reduction in car use.

They asserted that health professionals across the world need to put health at the heart of climate change negotiations.

A research review being published in the December issue of the International Journal of Clinical Practice claims that regular exercise is highly important as it can reduce a person's risk of developing around 24 physical and mental health problems.
