Lack of exercise 'not the only reason why US adults have large waistlines'

Lack of exercise 'not the only reason why US adults have large waistlines'

08 October 2010 15:09

US women's failure to don their ladies fitness clothing and exercise regularly is not the only reason that they have larger waistlines than their British counterparts, a study has suggested.

The Research and Development Corporation (RAND Corporation), University College London and the Institute for Fiscal Studies in London claim that disparities between US and English adults' waist sizes are also caused by diet differences and other social and environmental factors such as stress.

Researchers found that a US adults' larger waist sizes put them at higher risk of diabetes.

James Smith, one of the study's authors and corporate chair of economics at RAND, said that, when it comes to diabetes, "waist size is the missing new risk factor we should be studying".

A report in the September 13th issue of Archives of Internal Medicine claimed that lifestyle interventions that incorporate exercise training can delay the onset of diabetes and also reduce cardiovascular risk.
