Ladies fitness clothing: Exercise programme 'can reduce postnatal depression risk'

Women who have recently given birth may want to consider putting on their ladies fitness clothing as a study has revealed that therapy programmes involving exercise can help to reduce the risk of developing postnatal depression (PND).

According to the American Physical Therapy Association, PND affects 13 per cent of all new mothers and usually occurs within the first three months after giving birth.

In the recent study, published in the March issue of Physical Therapy, 161 new mothers were randomly assigned to one of two groups - Experimental Mother and Baby (M&B) or Education Only (EO).

For eight weeks the M&B group undertook weekly one-hour sessions of exercise, perhaps in ladies fitness clothing, with their babies.

These sessions were conducted by a women's health physical therapist and the women were also given half-an-hour of parenting education by health care professionals.

The EO group just received written educational materials.

At the end of the study, those in the M&B group had significantly higher wellbeing scores and fewer depressive symptoms than those in the EO group.

According to the NHS, exercise, which could include going for a jog in ladies running wear, can reduce symptoms of depression and contribute to positive feelings of wellbeing.
