The government needs to improve the UK's environment before women will start to put on their ladies fitness wear and walk more, Ramblers has suggested.
In the new coalition government's outlined plans, support has been pledged for sustainable travel initiatives, including the promotion of cycling and walking.
Des de Moor, senior everyday walking officer at the charity, said that this was a positive development but that much more needs to be done to get more Brits off the sofa and on their feet.
"One of the main reasons why people don't walk more is because of the environment - it's not a very walker friendly environment," he explained.
Mr Moor noted that some changes had been made in London to improve facilities for walking but that "all cities should be walkable".
Last week, a meeting held by the Citizens Council of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence discussed the idea of offering incentives to people to lead a healthier lifestyle.
This could include women being rewarded with cash or food vouchers for donning their ladies fitness clothing and exercising more.
