Ladies fitness wear: Most Brits unaware that 'muffin tops' increase health risks

20 April 2010 15:00

Women who do not get enough exercise in their ladies fitness wear can develop 'muffin tops', but most are unaware that this puts them at risk of cancer, Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, a study has revealed.

A survey, commissioned by Diabetes UK, Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation (BHF) found that 97 per cent of Brits were unaware of this link.

Some 71 per cent of those surveyed admitted to carrying excess weight around their middle while 57 per cent of women thought that the waist measurement at which they become at risk was bigger than it actually is.

Professor Jane Wardle, director of Cancer Research UK's Health Behaviour Research Centre at University College London, advised women the best ways to reduce the fat around their middles: "Little changes that can become daily habits are the best, as they usually require less effort and can act as the building blocks of a much bigger lifestyle picture."

The Department of Health's Change4Life is now targeting overweight adults, trying to persuade them to don their men's or women's fitness wear and take up an active hobby such as dancing.
