Women looking for the exercise that provides the greatest health benefits should don their ladies gym clothing and take part in a traditional aerobic fitness programme, a recent study has suggested.
Researchers from the University of Alberta measured the fitness and health outcomes of both aerobic training and a pedometer-based walking programme.
The programmes were designed so that those taking part would use the same amount of energy.
After six months, those who took part in the aerobic programme had a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure compared to the walking group.
They also seemed to exert less effort during submaximal exercise and could work out for longer before their breathing became difficult.
Their peak VO2, a measurement of maximum oxygen intake, decreased by nine per cent compared to three per cent among the walkers.
Earlier in the year, celebrity exercise expert Nicki Waterman predicted that fitness classes incorporating aerobic yet low-impact moves inspired by Strictly Come Dancing would be popular in 2010.
