Large waistlines 'increase risk of premature death'

Large waistlines 'increase risk of premature death'

11 August 2010 15:00

Women with large waistlines may want to think about investing in some ladies fitness clothing as recent research has indicated that this abdominal obesity measure can increase a person's risk of dying prematurely.

The study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, examined the association between waist circumference (WC) and premature death in 48,500 men and 56,343 women aged 50 or over.

A total of 9,315 men and 5,332 women died between 1997 and the end of the study's follow-up period in 2006.

Very high levels of WC were found to be associated with approximately a twofold increased risk of mortality in both men and women.

The study data also showed that this risk was present regardless of the participant's body mass indices (BMI).

"These results emphasise the importance of WC as a risk factor for mortality in older adults, regardless of BMI," a conclusion of the research clarified.

Last month, researchers from Canada, the Netherlands and the UK studied data on 21,787 men and women aged from 45 to 79 and found that those with larger waistlines were more likely to develop heart disease.
