Lifestyle change 'is the only answer to heart disease'

Increasing exercise in gym clothing and making other healthy lifestyle changes is the answer to preventing heart disease.

This was the conclusion made at the European Society of Cardiology-hosted 2010 European Summit on cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention on November 30th.

Much of the event centred on how governments should respond to overwhelming evidence that shows how lifestyle factors such as poor diet, a lack of exercise, alcohol abuse and smoking have made CVD into an epidemic.

"It is shocking that the vast majority of the four million or so deaths in Europe each year from CVD can be attributed to lifestyle issues rather than underlying medical conditions," said the summit's organiser Ian Graham, professor of cardiovascular medicine at Trinity College, Dublin.

Earlier this month, a study published in the German Medical Association's official international science journal revealed that elderly women who exercise regularly have a life expectancy that is almost four years higher than their inactive peers.
