Liliya Shobukhova triumphs in London Marathon ladies running wear

Liliya Shobukhova won this weekend's London Marathon in her ladies running wear, bettering last year's second place.

The Russian finished well-ahead of British hopeful Mara Yamauchi, who came in tenth place, which in part she attributed to training time lost travelling over from Japan.

Shobokhova ran a time of two hours 21 minutes and 59 seconds, compared to Yamauchi's time of two hours, 26 minutes.

Yamauchi admitted that she struggled as the pace quickened, falling back into eighth as the leading pack stretched their lead after the halfway point.

She said: "We started off at the speed I expected and I was working hard to stick with it, but the journey here and the injury last year maybe proved too much."

The conditions were good for marathon running, with Shobukhova describing the conditions as "almost perfect".

However, many of the male athletes complained that the unexpected rain had slowed them down.
